Wadi Rum
Stretching across 720 square kilometres of southern Jordan, Wadi Rum is a protected wilderness of cathedral-scale sandstone and granite formations shaped over millions of years. Known as the Valley of the Moon, the landscape holds 12,000 years of human history: 25,000 rock carvings and 20,000 inscriptions trace the Nabataeans, Thamudic tribes and early Arab civilisations that once passed through these canyons. UNESCO inscribed the Wadi Rum Protected Area as a World Heritage Site in 2011, recognising its outstanding cultural and natural value.
Within the reserve, visitors traverse rose-red sand valleys between monolithic cliffs, stopping at Khaz'ali Canyon for ancient petroglyphs, climbing to natural arches for panoramic views, and visiting the ruins of a Nabataean temple. At night, the absence of light pollution transforms the sky into one of the most spectacular stargazing sites in the Middle East. The desert's otherworldly character has drawn filmmakers for decades — from Lawrence of Arabia (1962) to The Martian (2015) and Dune (2021).
Wadi Rum lies 324 kilometres south of Amman, a four-hour drive, and 60 kilometres east of Aqaba. It sits two hours from Petra, making it a natural addition to any southern Jordan itinerary. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most comfortable temperatures for desert exploration; summer nights remain pleasant even when midday heat is intense. Overnight camping is strongly recommended to experience the desert at dawn and dusk.
