Mount Nebo
Rising 817 metres above the Jordan Valley in the Madaba Governorate, Mount Nebo is among the most venerated sites in biblical geography. According to Deuteronomy 34, Moses climbed the Siyagha ridge to survey the Promised Land before his death, gazing across a vertical drop of more than 1,200 metres to the Dead Sea below. A Byzantine church was built on the summit in the 4th century and substantially rebuilt in AD 597; Franciscan excavations begun in 1933 revealed a sequence of 6th and 7th-century mosaic floors, now displayed inside a modern basilica reopened after restoration in 2016.
The nave mosaics — a 9-by-3-metre panel depicting hunters, shepherds and exotic animals in vivid earthen tones — are the centrepiece of any visit. Outside the church, Giovanni Fantoni's Brazen Serpent Monument merges the bronze serpent of Numbers 21 with the crucifixion cross. On a clear morning the panorama encompasses the Jordan River, Jericho and, some 46 kilometres distant, the skyline of Jerusalem.
Mount Nebo lies 33km west of Madaba and 48km southwest of Amman, a 45-minute drive on well-paved roads. It pairs naturally with Madaba's Byzantine churches and the thermal springs of Ma'in, 30km south. Spring and autumn offer the clearest long-distance views across the Jordan Valley.
